Portslade Boxing Club
I'm Nick Jenman
I've been involved in boxing for 31 years, fighting and coaching. In May 2026 I started Portslade Boxing Club on my own, with nowhere to train and no boxers. Five people turned up to the first session.
How we got here
From a nine-year-old at Quayside to a sold-out home show.
First time in a boxing gym
I walked through the doors of Quayside Youth Centre and started boxing.
First amateur seasons
Four fights and four wins in my first season, aged ten. Five fights and four wins in the second. I beat the lad I lost to twice after that.
First professional title
Won at York Hall in London, in the away corner, with the odds against me.
The first session
Five people, training at Underground Gym in Brighton. By the end of the first week the sessions were full.
Two Quest champions
Sam Hoodless and Archie McManus both won Quest titles on the same night at Epsom Downs.
Back to Quayside
The club moved into Quayside Youth Centre, the building where I started.
Our first home show
Sold out at Southwick Leisure Centre, with six title fights on the card.
1996
Where it started for me
My amateur medical card from the Sussex ABA, from my first seasons as a ten-year-old. Four fights, four wins.
Our home
Quayside Youth Centre
For a lot of people Quayside holds good memories. For me it's where my boxing started, so when the chance came to bring the club here, I couldn't turn it down. Having a permanent home means we can open the doors to more boxers and add more classes.
Thank you
Underground Gym, Brighton
Sol Gilbert at Underground Gym has supported me for years, right through my professional career. He gave Portslade Boxing Club a base while we found our feet, and I'll always be grateful for it.
Come down and train
Send us a message first so we know you're coming. Tell us whether you've boxed before (it's fine if you haven't), then come to Quayside on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday.
